Bejaïa is an exciting and historical city located on the south coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Algeria. Béjaïa was the capital for the Berber Hammadid dynasty in the 11th century, and became an important Mediterranean port and cultural center.

First known in Europe thanks to the quality of the candles made of beeswax to which it gave its name (les bougies in french), Bejaïa also played an important role in the dissemination of Arabic numerals in the West. Indeed, Leonardo Fibonacci— considered as "the most talented Western mathematician of the Middle Ages - learned in Bejaia Indian mathematics which he called Modus Indorum, Hindu-Arabic numerals, and introduced them and modern mathematics into Europe.
